THE GOSPEL DOESN’T NEED A REBRAND

Companies rebrand overnight. Politicians change positions. Trends come and go. Even truth seems negotiable these days. But there is one message that cannot be edited: the gospel.

That was Paul’s burning concern in Galatians. As Pastor Nixon said in jest, “That’s why Paul was so Galait. Galait-sya talaga.” 😄

The churches there weren’t rejecting Jesus. They were adding to Jesus. And Paul was furious.

1. The Gospel Is Sent by God

Paul opens his letter by establishing the source. His apostleship, grace, peace, and salvation all come from God. Christianity exists because God acted first. The gospel is not humanity reaching up to God, but God reaching down to us.

Think of a building collapse. The victims can’t rescue themselves. Their only hope is that someone is sent for them. That’s the gospel. Many people treat it as a self-improvement program, but Paul presents it as a rescue mission.

You can coach a drowning person to swim better, or you can save them.

Jesus didn’t come to make bad people good. He came to rescue dead sinners.

So stop trying to earn what Jesus has already secured. A bad week doesn’t mean God is disappointed in you. A good week doesn’t mean God owes you.

We obey because we are loved, not to be loved.

2. The Gospel Must Not Be Changed

Paul skips his usual thanksgiving and goes straight to confrontation: “I am astonished.” The Galatians were deserting the One who called them in grace. The false teachers said, “Jesus plus circumcision, plus the law, plus human effort.” Paul says Jesus plus nothing equals salvation.

Imagine a rescue helicopter telling a drowning man, “Swim to that island, and then we’ll pick you up.” The moment a condition is added, it’s no longer a rescue.

The most dangerous false gospels don’t remove Jesus. They add to him. They sound Christian and use Christian language, but they shift our trust away from Christ.

So the question is, “What am I trusting for acceptance before God? Jesus, or Jesus plus something else?”

3. The Gospel Is to Be Proclaimed, Not Customized

Why do false gospels emerge? Often it’s the fear of rejection. We soften hard truths because we want approval. That’s how Paul expressed it in Galatians 1:10. “For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

But Paul saw himself as an ambassador, and ambassadors don’t negotiate new policy. They deliver the King’s message.

Every generation is tempted to customize the gospel: one without repentance, without grace, without offense, or one that bends to culture. But the church’s calling is not innovation. It’s faithfulness.

FINAL THOUGHT

Which part of the gospel are you tempted to soften or avoid because of how others might respond? Sin? Repentance? The exclusivity of Christ? Paul’s question still stands: “Am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God?”

The gospel cannot be revised. Jesus paid it all.
