When Jesus Comes Not As Who We Imagined

Have you ever expected God to show up in a certain way, only to be surprised by how differently He worked? This tension reminds me of The Karate Kid. Daniel Larusso wanted to learn karate but was instead tasked with mundane chores like waxing cars and painting fences. Frustrated, he later realized these tasks were foundational to his training. Similarly, God often defies our expectations to teach us deeper truths.
Palm Sunday is a perfect example of this. As Jesus entered Jerusalem, the crowds anticipated a political Messiah who would overthrow Roman rule. Instead, they received a King who came to bring peace, salvation, and eternal hope. Let’s explore four characteristics of this unexpected King from Matthew 21:1–11.
1. Sovereignty: The King with Divine Authority
Jesus orchestrated every detail of His triumphal entry. He sent His disciples to retrieve a donkey and colt, fulfilling Zechariah’s prophecy (Zechariah 9:9). This wasn’t a random event—it was a deliberate act revealing His authority over all creation.
Jesus’ sovereignty reminds us that God is in control of every situation in our lives. Even when we don’t understand His plans, we can trust that He’s working all things for His glory and our good. Our role is simple: obey faithfully, even when the path seems unclear.
2. Humility: The King Who Comes in Peace
Unlike earthly kings who ride warhorses to display power, Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey—a symbol of humility and peace. This act redefined kingship and fulfilled prophecy, showing that Jesus came not to wage war but to reconcile humanity with God.
True greatness in God’s kingdom is marked by humility and service. As Philippians 2:3–4 reminds us, we’re called to value others above ourselves and follow Jesus’ example of selfless love.
3. Punctuality: The King Who Fulfills Prophecy
Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem wasn’t just timely—it was divinely precise. It occurred on the 10th day of Nisan, the day lambs were selected for Passover sacrifice. By presenting Himself on this day, Jesus declared that He was the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
God’s timing is always perfect. Even when delays frustrate us or answers seem slow, we can trust that He’s working everything out according to His divine schedule.
4. Majesty: The King Who Deserves Our Worship
As the crowds shouted “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they recognized Jesus as the promised Messiah from David’s lineage. Yet their praise was often rooted in political hopes rather than spiritual truth.
Jesus deserves more than lip service—He deserves our wholehearted worship as the King of Kings. Worship isn’t just about singing songs; it’s about surrendering every area of our lives to His rule.
Palm Sunday reminds us that Jesus is not always the King we expect—but He is always the King we need. His sovereignty assures us He’s in control; His humility teaches us how to live; His punctuality proves His faithfulness; and His majesty calls us to worship.
As we prepare for Easter, let’s reflect on these truths and respond with faith and awe. Are you following Jesus for who He truly is—or for what you want Him to do? Let’s surrender our expectations and embrace Him as our Savior and King.
