This morning, I had the privilege of hearing Pastor Rod Plummer speak at our 11:00 service. Rod is the Senior Pastor of Lifehouse International Church in Japan and a dear friend of our ministry. Later, I joined him and our campus missionary, Moses, for lunch, where I had the chance to ask him a question that’s been on my mind: “What’s the secret to longevity in ministry?”
Pastor Rod shared a powerful three-point answer that resonated deeply with me.
First, he emphasized the importance of daily journaling. This isn’t just about recording events; it’s about actively listening to God’s word and quickly capturing the thoughts He speaks to you each day.
Second, he spoke about simple prayer. He described prayer as a daily conversation with God—not necessarily long, but constant—happening throughout the day, before it begins, and after it ends.
Finally, he stressed the need for a clean heart at night. Pulling from Ephesians, he advised against letting the sun go down on anger. This means letting go of offenses, repenting before God, and forgiving others so that our hearts remain free from bitterness.
Pastor Rod’s advice was simple, actionable, and clearly forged through years of dedicated service. It reminds us that sustaining long-term ministry isn’t about grand strategies, but about these small, daily habits of faith and heart-maintenance.
